Chlorine in your mains water

NZ town water is chlorinated at the treatment plant to kill bacteria and make it safe to drink. By the time it reaches your taps, the chlorine has done its job — but it's still there, and it affects the taste and smell of everything it touches: drinking water, cooking, coffee, ice.

Adding a KDF/GAC stage to the system provides a second line of treatment for chlorine and also targets heavy metals from pipework — a common concern in older homes. The final carbon block polishes the water before it reaches your taps.

What's included

Stage 1 — 10PP05, 5 micron polyspun sediment

Catches fine sediment, rust, and particles from the mains supply. Protects the KDF/GAC and carbon block stages downstream and extends their service life.

Stage 2 — 10GAC/KDF, KDF/GAC filter

KDF media reduces heavy metals and chlorine through a chemical exchange process. The granular activated carbon layer handles taste, colour, and odour compounds. Together they deliver broader treatment than carbon alone — particularly useful in areas with older pipework where heavy metal content may be a concern.

Stage 3 — 10CTO05, 5 micron carbon block

The final chlorine and taste stage. Activated carbon removes any remaining chlorine, chemical taste, odour, and colour before the water reaches your taps. NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 compliant — independently tested against health and aesthetic effects standards.

Replace all three cartridges every 6–12 months. The clearest signal for the carbon block is a return of chlorine taste — even if flow rate is still good.

Why choose this system

  • Three stages of mains water treatment — sediment, heavy metals, and chlorine all addressed in sequence
  • KDF/GAC stage reduces heavy metals as well as chlorine — broader treatment than a two-stage carbon system
  • NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 compliant carbon block — independently tested for chlorine and taste reduction
  • Pre-configured for mains water — correct cartridges installed and ready
  • Polyspun first stage protects both downstream cartridges and extends their life
  • Food-grade materials — safe for use in drinking water systems
  • Brass threaded ports — durable and corrosion-resistant connections
  • Pressure relief button on each housing — safely releases pressure before cartridge changes
  • Choice of standard bracket, stainless steel bracket, or freestanding stand
  • Fully assembled — connect to your supply and you're done
  • Compatible with all standard 10 inch jumbo cartridges (4.5 inch diameter)

Frequently asked questions

Why choose a 3-stage system over a 2-stage system?

The 2-stage mains water set handles sediment and chlorine. The 3-stage adds a KDF/GAC middle stage that reduces heavy metals as well as providing an additional layer of chlorine treatment. If you have older pipework or want broader treatment, the 3-stage is the better choice.

What does KDF/GAC do that carbon alone doesn't?

Carbon block is excellent at reducing chlorine, taste, and odour. KDF media adds heavy metal reduction through a chemical exchange process — targeting lead, copper, and other metals that can leach from older pipes. The combination delivers broader treatment than carbon alone.

Why do I need a whole house filter for chlorine — can't I just filter the drinking tap?

You can, and an underbench system is a great option for drinking water. But if you want chlorine removed from every tap — including showers, the laundry, and cooking water — a whole house system is the right choice. It treats everything before the water branches off to individual outlets.

Is this suitable for rainwater or tank water?

No — this set is configured specifically for mains (town) water. For rainwater or tank water, a system with a pleated first stage is the better fit — get in touch and we'll point you to the right option.

What does NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 mean for the carbon block?

NSF 42 covers aesthetic effects — independently tested for chlorine, taste, and odour reduction. NSF 53 covers health effects — tested for the reduction of specific contaminants. Both certifications confirm the carbon block performs to a verified standard, not just a manufacturer claim.

How often do I replace the filters?

Every 6–12 months depending on your water quality and usage. The clearest signal for the carbon block is a return of chlorine taste — even if flow rate is still good. Replace all three cartridges at the same time.

What's the difference between the bracket and stand options?

The standard and stainless steel brackets mount the housings to a wall. The stand is a freestanding combined stand and bracket unit — it doesn't require wall mounting, which suits installations where wall mounting isn't practical.

What is the pressure relief button for?

The pressure relief button (air bleeder) on each housing releases pressure before you unscrew it for a cartridge change. Always press it before opening a housing — it prevents water spraying out and makes cartridge changes cleaner and easier.

Should I add a pressure gauge?

A pressure gauge lets you monitor the pressure drop across the filters — when pressure drops noticeably it's a reliable sign the cartridges need replacing. Useful if you want to track filter life without guessing.

Do I need a plumber to install it?

For most customers, yes — a licensed plumber is the safest path. The set uses standard 25mm BSP fittings and arrives fully assembled with a housing spanner. If you're confident with household plumbing, the installation is straightforward. Get in touch if you're unsure.

What warranty does it come with?

2 years.
