The Davey CrystalClear ER Series is a premium cartridge pool filter designed for efficient filtration without the need for backwashing.
Suitable for in-ground and above-ground pools, the range can be used with fresh water, salt water and mineral salt pools. Four models are available from 135 ft² to 270 ft² filtration area, with maximum flow rates from 381 to 510 L/min.
Unlike a media filter, the CrystalClear ER uses heavy-duty reusable polyester filter elements. When cleaning is required, the element is removed from the housing, washed and reinstalled.
This makes the CrystalClear ER particularly useful where reducing water use is important or where a conventional backwash waste line is impractical.

How It Works
Pool water enters the CrystalClear ER housing and passes through the pleated polyester filter element.
The large surface area of the cartridge captures suspended debris while allowing water to flow back to the pool.
The wide and deep pleats increase the available filtration area without requiring a large media tank. Generous spacing between the pleats also makes the element easier to wash when servicing is required.
As debris accumulates, resistance across the cartridge increases. The pressure gauge helps indicate when the element requires cleaning.
Unlike sand or glass media filters, the CrystalClear ER does not require a backwash cycle. The filter is depressurised using the manual air bleed, opened and the reusable cartridge element removed for cleaning.

Cartridge Technology
The CrystalClear ER uses heavy-duty reusable polyester filter fabric.
The elements feature wide, deep pleats to provide a large filtration area within the filter housing. Larger gaps between the pleats make trapped debris easier to remove during cleaning and support longer filtration cycles.
There is no loose sand or glass media to replace.
No Backwashing Required
A key advantage of cartridge filtration is that there is no conventional backwash cycle.
With a media filter, pool water is periodically discharged to waste to clean the filter bed. The CrystalClear ER instead uses a removable cartridge element that can be washed and returned to service.
This can significantly reduce the amount of pool water lost during routine filter maintenance.

Vertical clearance is particularly important because the cartridge element must be lifted from the housing for cleaning and replacement.
Maintenance
The cartridge element is reusable and designed to be removed for cleaning.
A typical service process involves:
- Switch off the circulation pump.
- Depressurise the filter using the manual air bleed.
- Open the hand-operated lid locking ring.
- Remove the cartridge element.
- Wash accumulated debris from between the pleats.
- Inspect the element for wear or damage.
- Reinstall the clean element and correctly secure the filter before restarting the system.
Monitor the pressure gauge during normal use. Increasing resistance through the element indicates that cleaning may be required.
