A food grade polypropylene sediment cartridge with no chemical residue, no loose fibres, and nothing to add to your water.

The Davey Microlene 10" Jumbo Polyspun Sediment Filter Cartridge is made from 100% food grade polypropylene — no gaskets, binders, fillers, loose fibres, centre core, or surfactants. Every cartridge consists of thousands of thermally bonded fibres that won't shift with changes in flow or pressure. It carries WaterMark certification (WMTS-103, Lic. 22987) and is tested in compliance with AS/NZS 4020 for use in contact with drinking water.

Suits rainwater, bore, and mains water supplies. Used in the second stage of filtration for finer sediment removal, or as a pre-filter ahead of UV treatment, carbon filtration, or reverse osmosis. The 1 micron variant carries a Cryptosporidium cyst removal rating of greater than 99%.

Also available in a Dual Gradient option (PSDG10J) — a single cartridge that combines 25 micron pre-filtration and 1 micron final filtration in one unit, frequently eliminating the need for a separate pre-filter cartridge and housing. Note: the Dual Gradient variant does not carry WaterMark certification.

Not cleanable. Replace every 12 months or when flow rate drops noticeably. Sold as a single cartridge.

Why Kiwi Homeowners Choose Davey Microlene Polyspun

  • 100% food grade polypropylene — no gaskets, binders, fillers, or surfactants to leach into your water
  • Thermally bonded fibres won't shift under pressure changes, keeping captured particles locked in the cartridge
  • No extractables — meets regulatory guidelines for potable water, food, and pharmaceutical use
  • WaterMark and AS/NZS 4020 certified (standard variants)
  • 1 micron variant rated for >99% Cryptosporidium cyst removal

Choosing the Right Micron

  • 20 micron — General sediment: rust, sand, visible and near-visible particles. Good as a second-stage sediment filter after a coarser pre-filter.
  • 5 micron — Fine sediment: removes fine particles ahead of UV or carbon filtration.
  • 1 micron — Very fine sediment: captures very fine particles including Cryptosporidium cysts (>99% removal rating). Ideal as a final polish before UV treatment.

Lower micron ratings filter finer but clog faster — 1 micron cartridges will need replacing more often in high-sediment water supplies.

Dual Gradient Option (PSDG10J)

The Dual Gradient is a single cartridge that does two jobs — a 25 micron outer layer handles coarse pre-filtration, while a 1 micron inner layer provides fine final filtration. This often eliminates the need for a separate pre-filter cartridge and housing.

Suitable for a small house with one bathroom (up to 38 lpm). The brochure notes it is effective in removing the majority of Giardia and Cryptosporidium cysts from drinking water.

Important: the Dual Gradient (PSDG10J) does not carry WaterMark certification. If WaterMark certification is a requirement for your installation, choose the 1PS10J (1 micron standard polyspun) instead.

FAQ

Which micron rating should I choose?

For general sediment in rainwater or bore water, 20 micron is a solid starting point. For finer filtration ahead of UV or carbon, choose 5 micron. For maximum fine particle removal including Cryptosporidium cysts, choose 1 micron. If you want pre-filtration and fine filtration in a single cartridge, the Dual Gradient (PSDG10J) is worth considering — but note it doesn't carry WaterMark certification. Not sure? Get in touch and we'll help.

What's the Dual Gradient cartridge and should I use it?

The Dual Gradient (PSDG10J) combines a 25 micron outer pre-filter and a 1 micron inner filter in a single cartridge. It can simplify your system by removing the need for a separate pre-filter stage. It's rated for small homes with one bathroom (up to 38 lpm). The trade-off is a lower flow rate than the standard polyspun variants and no WaterMark certification.

Can I clean and reuse this cartridge?

No. Polyspun cartridges are not cleanable. Replace when flow rate drops noticeably, or at least every 12 months.

How often do I need to replace it?

Every 12 months is the recommended interval. In high-sediment water supplies you may need to replace more frequently — when flow rate drops noticeably, it's time to replace.

Will it fit my housing?

It fits most 10" jumbo housings — those designed for a 10" × 4.5" cartridge. To check, measure the inside diameter of your housing. Jumbo cartridges are approximately 4.5" across; standard cartridges are approximately 2.5".

What do the certifications mean?

WaterMark WMTS-103 means the product has been independently tested and certified against Australian/New Zealand water industry standards. AS/NZS 4020 means it has been tested and approved for use in contact with drinking water. These certifications apply to the standard polyspun variants (1, 5, 20 micron) only — not the Dual Gradient (PSDG10J).

Is it suitable for drinking water?

The standard variants (1, 5, 20 micron) are tested in compliance with AS/NZS 4020, meaning the materials have been independently assessed as safe for contact with potable water. The Dual Gradient variant is not AS/NZS 4020 certified.

What's the difference between polyspun and pleated cartridges?

Polyspun cartridges are disposable — they cannot be cleaned and reused. They use a depth filtration structure rather than a surface filtration structure. Polyspun is typically used for finer sediment removal in the second stage of filtration; pleated cartridges are more common as a coarser first stage. Polyspun also tends to have a higher dirt-holding capacity for fine particles.

Do I need special tools to change the cartridge?

You'll need a housing wrench to open the filter housing — most housings include one. Beyond that, no special tools are required.

What warranty applies?

Filter cartridges are consumables and are not covered under a product warranty. If your cartridge arrives damaged or defective, contact us and we'll sort it out.
