The AAL is a non-regenerable drinking water cartridge designed to reduce fluoride to below 0.5 ppm and arsenic to below 0.02 ppm. Its media is 550 grams of pre-conditioned fine mesh activated alumina — a highly porous, adsorbent material that has undergone a special activation process to maximise its surface area and filtration capacity. Constructed entirely from FDA grade materials and media.
Fits all standard 10" housings (9 3/4" cartridge length, 2.5" diameter).
For best results, keep flow rate below 1 litre per minute. This cartridge is suited to benchtop and underbench filter systems — not direct kitchen tap installations where flow rates are typically higher.
For best drinking water quality, follow the AAL with a carbon block cartridge. Activated alumina removes fluoride effectively but can affect taste — a carbon stage after the AAL clears this.
Sold as a single cartridge.
How it works
The AAL uses pre-conditioned fine mesh activated alumina — a naturally occurring aluminium oxide compound that has been specially processed to increase its surface area and porosity. Water passes through a 100 micron pre-filter foam layer first, then through the activated alumina media, then through a 20 micron spun-bonded polypropylene post-filter. Fluoride and arsenic are adsorbed onto the alumina media as water passes through.

Questions
What is activated alumina and how does it reduce fluoride?
Activated alumina is a highly porous form of aluminium oxide. Its large surface area allows it to adsorb fluoride and arsenic ions as water passes through. The AAL uses a pre-conditioned fine mesh version specifically designed for single-use cartridge applications.
Does it reduce arsenic as well?
Yes. The AAL has been shown to reduce arsenic to below 0.02 ppm from a 0.12 ppm feed. Note that the total capacity for arsenic removal has not been fully determined — if arsenic reduction is the primary concern, get in touch and we can help with the right setup.
Why do I need a carbon filter after it?
Activated alumina cartridges can affect the taste of water. Following the AAL with a carbon block cartridge removes any residual taste, giving you clean-tasting, fluoride-reduced water.
How long does it last?
Replace every 6 months, or more frequently if flow slows or usage is higher than typical household levels. Capacity is rated at 5,500 ppm fluoride — in practical terms, replacement interval depends on the fluoride level in your supply and how much water you filter.
Does flow rate affect performance?
Yes. High flow rates reduce the contact time between water and the activated alumina, which reduces fluoride removal efficiency. Keep flow below 1 litre per minute for best results. High pH and high bicarbonate levels also reduce capacity — if your water is above 100 ppm bicarbonate, capacity reduces by approximately 50%; above 200 ppm, by approximately 75%.
Will it fit my housing?
The AAL is 9 3/4" long and fits all standard 10" filter housings with a 2.5" diameter cartridge slot.
Can I use it with rainwater or tank water?
The AAL is designed primarily for mains water fluoride and arsenic reduction. If you're on a rainwater or tank supply and have a specific fluoride or arsenic concern, get in touch and we'll help you work out the right configuration.
