Davey Microlene Acquasafe — Tank Water Disinfectant

Clean, disinfected tank water — without chlorine taste, odour, or chemical residuals.

Davey Microlene Acquasafe is a hydrogen peroxide-based tank water disinfectant designed to destroy bacteria and viruses in rainwater and tank water supplies. The active ingredient is listed in the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines for the purpose of treating drinking water. Acquasafe breaks down into oxygen and water — leaving no colour, odour, or taste in your supply.

Available in three sizes: 1 litre (AS-1), 5 litre (AS-5), and 25 litre (AS-25).

How It Works

Acquasafe uses patented technology to oxidise bacteria and viruses on contact, then leaves a residual in the tank to prevent recontamination for up to two months under normal conditions. One litre treats 15,000 litres of water — making it a cost-effective ongoing treatment for most household tank sizes.

Rainwater starts out clean but picks up contamination as soon as it contacts a collection surface. Animal and bird droppings, dust, dirt, and decaying leaf matter can all introduce bacteria including E. coli and streptococci into a tank. Acquasafe is designed to manage this contamination at the source.

For added protection against protozoan cysts such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, Acquasafe should be used in conjunction with 1 micron depth filtration. Get in touch and we'll recommend the right filtration setup for your supply.

Bore water quality varies significantly. We recommend testing your bore water before selecting a treatment — get in touch and we'll help you choose the right configuration for your supply.

Standard Dosage — 24 Hour Contact Time

Volume of Water Required Dose
1,000 litres 67 ml
5,000 litres 333 ml
10,000 litres 666 ml
15,000 litres 1 litre
30,000 litres 2 litres
45,000 litres 3 litres
60,000 litres 4 litres
75,000 litres 5 litres
150,000 litres 10 litres
300,000 litres 20 litres
375,000 litres 25 litres

For standard rainwater, follow the dosage table above.

Alternative Dosage — Urgent Use

  • 1 litre per 7,500 litres — required contact time 2 hours
  • 1 litre per 5,000 litres — required contact time 40 minutes

Increasing the concentration is a safe way to disinfect water quickly. Doses exceeding 1 litre per 5,000 litres are not recommended. Both alternative dosages are well within Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

For other water sources or extremely dirty tank water, additional treatment may be required — get in touch and we'll advise.

Re-Dosing

When new water enters the tank through rainfall, new contamination can enter and the existing Acquasafe concentration is diluted over a larger volume. Test and re-dose after significant rainfall events to maintain effective protection. Acquasafe will also break down over time in a stable system — ongoing testing with test strips is recommended to ensure the water remains within safe levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Acquasafe made from?

The main active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide, stabilised to ensure longevity of the formula. It is listed in the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines for the purpose of treating drinking water. In use, it breaks down into oxygen and water.

How long does Acquasafe protect my tank?

Up to two months under normal conditions with standard dosing. Protection is reduced when new water enters the tank through rainfall — test and re-dose after significant rainfall to maintain effective treatment.

Does Acquasafe affect the taste or smell of my water?

No. Acquasafe leaves no colour, odour, or taste in the water. This is one of the main advantages over chlorine-based treatments, which can leave an unpleasant taste and smell.

Does Acquasafe protect against Giardia and Cryptosporidium?

For added protection against protozoan cysts such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, Acquasafe should be used in conjunction with 1 micron depth filtration. Get in touch and we'll recommend the right setup for your supply.

How do I know if my tank water is safe?

Regular testing with Acquasafe test strips (sold separately) allows you to monitor the residual level in your tank and confirm when re-dosing is needed.

How much do I need for my tank?

Use the standard dosage table above — 1 litre of Acquasafe treats 15,000 litres of water with a 24-hour contact time. For urgent disinfection, the higher-concentration options listed above allow faster treatment times.

Is it safe to use around children and animals?

Acquasafe in diluted form is safe to drink and is non-toxic. It breaks down into oxygen and water with no harmful chemical residuals.

What size should I buy?

The 1 litre (AS-1) suits smaller tanks or those wanting to try the product first. The 5 litre (AS-5) suits most household tanks and offers better value for regular treatment. The 25 litre (AS-25) is suited to large tanks, multiple tanks, or commercial use.
