The Davey Microlene AFAC10 is a specialist drinking water cartridge that reduces fluoride levels by 80 to 90% while also improving taste and odour. It combines Actival — a fluoride-selective media — with granular activated carbon to tackle both fluoride and the chlorine, tastes, and odours common in treated town supply.

Designed for cold water, point-of-use use only. Not suitable for whole-house installation. A sediment pre-filter is recommended to protect the media and get the most out of the cartridge's service life.

Sold as a single cartridge.

Why Kiwi homeowners choose Davey Microlene

  • Dual-action media targets both fluoride and taste and odour in one cartridge
  • Actival is a preconditioned, fluoride-selective media — not a generic carbon block
  • 80–90% reduction in fluoride at typical NZ town supply levels
  • Long-standing reputation in NZ water filtration
  • NZ-based support if you need help choosing or installing

Important — what affects performance

The Actival media works best within certain water conditions. High pH, flow rates above 2 lpm, and bicarbonate alkalinity above 100 mg/L will reduce fluoride removal effectiveness. If your water falls outside these ranges, get in touch before purchasing.

FAQ

What does this cartridge actually remove?

The AFAC10 reduces fluoride by 80 to 90% at the typical 1 mg/L level added to NZ town supplies. The granular activated carbon also removes chlorine and the compounds that cause off tastes and odours.

How long does it last?

Rated to 2,000 L, with a typical service life of 6 months in normal household use — whichever comes first. Cartridge life will vary depending on your water quality and flow habits.

Does the capacity figure refer to fluoride reduction specifically?

Yes. The 2,000 L rating is based on 80–90% fluoride reduction at 1 mg/L fluoride. The GAC component for taste and odour may have a longer effective life, but replace the whole cartridge at 2,000 L or 6 months.

Can I use it for whole-house filtration?

No. The AFAC10 is designed for point-of-use, cold water service only. It is not rated for whole-house installation.

Does it need a sediment pre-filter?

It's strongly recommended. A sediment pre-filter upstream protects the Actival media's active sites from clogging and helps the cartridge reach its full service life.

What water conditions affect performance?

High pH, flow rates above 2 lpm, and bicarbonate alkalinity above 100 mg/L will reduce fluoride removal effectiveness. If you're unsure about your water quality, get in touch before purchasing.

Will it fit my housing?

The AFAC10 is a 10" standard cartridge (10" × 2.5"). It fits any 10" standard filter housing. If your housing takes a 2.5" diameter cartridge, it's compatible.

Can I clean and reuse it?

No. The AFAC10 is non-regenerable — the Actival media is consumed as it captures fluoride and cannot be restored at home.

Do I need special tools to change it?

No. A standard filter housing spanner — usually supplied with your housing — is all you need.

What warranty applies?

Filter cartridges are consumable items. If yours arrives damaged or defective, get in touch and we'll sort it out.
