The Pentair Pentek 10" Jumbo Dual Gradient Density Sediment Water Filter Cartridge combines prefiltration and fine final filtration within a single high-capacity cartridge.
Unlike a conventional sediment filter with one micron rating throughout the media, the DGD Series uses gradient density filtration, progressively filtering from 25 micron on the outside to 1 micron on the inside.
This design allows larger particles to be captured in the outer layers before the water reaches the finer inner filtration media. The result is up to three times the dirt-holding capacity of similar-size sediment cartridges, with even greater capacity than standard spun or string-wound cartridges.
Manufactured from 100% pure polypropylene, the cartridge will not impart taste, odour or colour to the water and provides excellent chemical resistance.
How Dual Gradient Density Filtration Works
The cartridge provides progressive sediment filtration within a single filter:
25 Micron Outer Layer → Progressive Depth Filtration → 1 Micron Inner Layer
Larger sediment is captured toward the outside of the cartridge, while progressively smaller particles are captured deeper within the media.
This prevents larger particles from unnecessarily loading the fine filtration layer, increasing the amount of sediment the cartridge can hold before replacement is required.
Why Choose a Dual Gradient Density Filter?
A conventional 1 micron sediment filter has to deal with both large and fine particles.
The DGD design instead combines appropriate prefiltration with selective final filtration.
This provides several advantages:
- 25 to 1 micron progressive filtration
- Up to 3× the dirt-holding capacity of similar-size sediment cartridges
- Greater capacity than standard spun filters
- Greater capacity than standard string-wound filters
- Increased effective filtration depth
- High particulate reduction efficiency
- Reduced loading on the fine inner filtration media
- Suitable for sediment-heavy water supplies
- High-capacity filtration in a single cartridge
233% Effective Filter Depth
The advanced DGD construction increases the cartridge's effective filter depth to a full 233%.
This additional depth provides greater space within the media to capture and retain particles rather than loading sediment predominantly onto one filtration surface.
The result is high particulate reduction efficiency combined with increased sediment-loading capacity.
100% Pure Polypropylene
The DGD Series is manufactured from 100% pure polypropylene.
The polypropylene construction:
- Will not impart taste to the water
- Will not impart odour
- Will not impart colour
- Provides excellent chemical resistance
- Is not prone to bacterial attack
This makes the cartridge well suited to applications where water purity and effective sediment filtration are important.

- Tank-water filtration
- Bore water
- Sediment-heavy water supplies
- Whole-house water filtration
- Fine sediment removal
- Multi-stage water treatment

- Situations where increased dirt-holding capacity is desirable
One Cartridge, Progressive Filtration
One of the biggest advantages of the DGD design is that you don't have to choose between coarse sediment capacity and fine filtration within the cartridge.
The outer media provides 25 micron prefiltration, capturing larger particles first.
As water moves deeper into the cartridge, the filtration becomes progressively finer until reaching 1 micron final filtration.
This makes more effective use of the cartridge's full depth and helps prevent the fine inner media from becoming prematurely loaded with larger particles.
DGD vs Standard Sediment Cartridge

| Effective Depth | 233% | Conventional construction |
| Dirt Capacity | Up to 3× similar-size cartridges | Lower |
| Material | 100% pure polypropylene | Varies |
| Taste / Odour / Colour | Will not impart | Varies by media |
Installation
The cartridge is designed for compatible 10" Jumbo / Big Blue filter housings.
To replace your cartridge:
- Turn off the incoming water supply.
- Release pressure from the filter housing.
- Unscrew and remove the housing sump.
- Remove the existing cartridge.
- Clean the inside of the housing as required.
- Check that the housing O-ring is clean and correctly seated.
- Install the new Pentair DGD cartridge.
- Reassemble the housing.
- Slowly restore the water supply.
- Check carefully for leaks.
- Flush the system before normal use.
Maintenance & Replacement
The DGD cartridge is designed to hold a substantial amount of sediment throughout its filtration depth.
Replacement frequency will depend on:
- Incoming water quality
- Amount of sediment
- Type and size of particles
- Water consumption
- System flow
- Other filtration stages installed upstream
A noticeable reduction in water flow can indicate that the cartridge has accumulated enough sediment to require replacement.
Unlike the washable pleated cartridges, this depth filtration cartridge is replaced when exhausted rather than routinely washed and reused.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does 25 micron to 1 micron mean?
It means the cartridge uses progressively finer filtration throughout its depth.
The outside begins at approximately 25 micron, capturing larger particles, before the filtration becomes progressively finer toward the 1 micron inner filtration layer.
Is this a 1 micron filter?
It provides 1 micron final filtration, but unlike a conventional 1 micron cartridge, it doesn't use the same fine filtration throughout its entire depth.
The outer media acts as a coarser prefilter before water reaches the fine inner media.
Why is gradient density useful?
Gradient density allows different particle sizes to be captured at different depths within the cartridge.
Larger particles are trapped toward the outside while smaller particles penetrate further into the progressively finer media.
This makes better use of the available filter depth and increases sediment-holding capacity.
How much sediment can it hold?
The DGD design provides up to three times the dirt-holding capacity of similar-size sediment cartridges, with even greater capacity than standard spun or string-wound cartridges.
What is the cartridge made from?
It is manufactured from 100% pure polypropylene.
Will the filter affect the taste of my water?
The polypropylene media is designed so it will not impart taste, odour or colour to the water being filtered.
Is it suitable for bore water?
Yes. Its high sediment capacity and progressive filtration make it particularly useful where the incoming supply contains a mixture of larger and finer suspended particles.
Is it suitable for tank water?
Yes. It can be used for sediment filtration on rainwater and tank-water systems.
Can I use it before a UV system?
Yes. Its 1 micron final filtration makes it useful as a fine sediment stage before downstream treatment equipment such as UV.
The complete filtration and treatment requirements still depend on the quality of the incoming water.
Is this cartridge washable?
No. This is a polypropylene depth filtration cartridge, not a washable pleated cartridge.
Once sediment loading causes unacceptable restriction or the cartridge reaches the end of its useful service life, replace it.
Will it fit a standard 10" water filter housing?
This is a 10" × 4½" Jumbo / Big Blue cartridge.
It requires a compatible 10" Jumbo / Big Blue housing and will not fit a slim 10" Standard housing.
What's the product code?
The product code is 10BDGD-PA.
